Fountas and Pinnell Reading Level

As a first year teacher I am learning so much about the world of education.  I never had any experience with F & P until after I started my job this year.  I was very confused at first but it is definitely a teacher friendly system.  Each grade level has a serious of reading levels they need to be at based on a letter system.  My students should go from P to S by the end of the year.  This system really helps me determine the text that I select for my students and helps differentiate the reading!  Right now in my class we are doing an author study about Roald Dahl.

Whole Class Read - James & the Giant Peach (Q)

High Group - Matlida (S)

Middle Group - Charlie & the Chocolate Factory (R)

Low Group - Fantastic Mr. Fox (P)

So far it is going well!  The text is perfect for the different groups in my class!  I paired these texts with learning about figurative language.  My students are having a fun time identifying them in their novels!

Photo ID Class List

So as a staff we are now required to wear ID tags all day.  After talking with the other teachers in my school we came up with this cool idea!  It is always a high stress situation if you have a fire drill and you need to make sure you have all of your students.  Why not add a class list of your students to the back of your ID tag?  It hangs around your neck at all times anyways!  Now it'll be less of a stress in an emergency situation because you already have your class list.

All I did was type out my class list on white paper in size 10 Arial Font and I taped it on the back with packing tape so there was a clear coating over the entire thing.  I have also seen some of the other teachers at my school put them on labels to the back.  It's totally up to you how you want to do it.

First Year Frenzy

It's my first year as a teacher and I have already learned soooo much.  I'm trying to carve my path in the teaching profession and sometimes it is exhausting but very rewarding.  On this blog, I will be posting several of my ideas, creations, and anything else related to teaching/education.
